Why I'm standing

This is the toughest period in our Party's history.  The scale of the task facing us in Scotland is enormous.

Looking beyond May, over the next few years we must rebuild our Party from the grassroots up, defend our councillors at their next election, fight the EU referendum and win back the trust of tens of thousands of former Labour voters who feel that we do not reflect their priorities and values - all the while holding the SNP and Tories to account for their policies at Holyrood and Westminster.

The Leader of our Party Kezia Dugdale has asked members to select new candidates to meet these enormous challenges.

That's why I have decided to put my name forward for your consideration.

We need Labour MSPs who have demonstrated that they can make a positive and immediate impact.

  • Impact in the Scottish Parliament, holding the SNP to account for their failures in Health, Education and Policing
  • Impact in the media explaining Labour's policies and setting out our positive case.
  • Impact in the Region helping to rebuild a vibrant Party that campaigns all year round in each and every constituency.

I've been a trade unionist, an activist, MP and a Shadow Minister.

I built one of our most effective campaigning Parties in the run up to the 2010 General Election, taking back Dunfermline & West Fife from the Liberal Democrats.

We went on to double the number of Labour councillors in the constituency in 2012 and defeat the SNP in both the Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath Scottish Parliament by-elections in 2013 & 2014.

Like you, I want a revived Labour Party to be a party of government again. In Parliament I can make an immediate difference, and I hope I can count on your support.
